What Is a Single-Hung Window?
A single-hung window has two sashes — an upper and a lower — but only the bottom sash moves. You slide the lower sash up to open the window, while the upper sash stays fixed in place. Single-hung windows are generally less expensive than double-hung because they have fewer moving parts.
What Is a Double-Hung Window?
A double-hung window has two sashes that both move — the lower sash slides up and the upper sash slides down. This gives you much more flexibility with ventilation (you can open just the top, just the bottom, or both), and makes cleaning much easier since both sashes typically tilt inward so you can clean the outside glass from inside your home.
Key Differences: Single-Hung vs Double-Hung
Single-Hung
- Lower cost
- Only bottom sash moves
- Fewer moving parts — potentially longer-lasting
- Harder to clean exterior glass
- Less ventilation flexibility
Double-Hung
- Slightly higher cost
- Both sashes move
- Much easier to clean — both sashes tilt in
- Superior ventilation control
- More popular choice for most rooms
Which Should You Choose?
If budget is your top priority and you don't need much ventilation flexibility, a single-hung window is a solid, cost-effective choice. But for most homeowners, a double-hung window's easier cleaning and superior airflow control make it worth the small price difference — which is why it's the more popular option for most rooms in the home.
